A 7.8-magnitude earthquake hit near Kahramanmaras city, Turkey, in the early hours of Monday, February 6 2023, followed by another 7.5-magnitude tremor just after midday. The quakes caused widespread destruction in southern Turkey and northern Syria and were felt in nearby countries. More than 50 thousand people died and more than 100 thousand people were injured in the 7.8 magnitude earthquake on February 6, 2023. According to Turkish Statistical Institute data, 14 million people were affected and 216 thousand 347 victims were evacuated from the region to other provinces. According to the UN, the cost of the earthquakes that caused destruction in 11 cities in southeastern Turkey is more than 100 billion.

Sedat Suna was born southeast of Turkey in Gaziantep city on 8 March 1982. Suna, graduated from high school in Gaziantep. He came to Istanbul in 2001 and started at Dicle News Agency (DiHA) as a reporter. He has collaborated with NarPhotos Photo Agency between 2004-2005 as a stringer photographer. He started to work for European Pressphoto Agency (EPA) in 2005 as a freelance photographer. He also worked for national newspaper HaberTurk as a staff photographer between 2009-2013. He was part of the EPA crew as a staff photographer from March 2013 until September 2023. Suna is based in Istanbul/ Turkey. He produces news photographs and stories as a freelance photographer. He has covered major news stories, humanitarian crises, disasters, social and political changes, conflict, international cultural, political and sports events. He has received awards from Pictures of the Year International (POY), Marco Luchetta International Press Award, Photojournalists Association of Turkey (TFMD) News Picture of the Year, Metin Goktepe Journalism Award, Musa Anter Free Press and Journalism Award, Progressive Journalists Association Award.
