People wait in hope for their loved ones trapped under rubble of collapsed buildings to be rescued. They saved all daily stuff they could from their houses, such as blankets, clothes, toys and mostly, souvenirs. Hatay, city in southern Turkey, was hit on February 6, 2023. The quakes took over 50,500 lives and left 105,000 injured. Around 14 million people have been affected by the quakes as well as many others in northern Syria. Search and rescue operations lasted for weeks. Over 11,300 personnel from 90 countries came to Turkey for help, including Austria, France, Mexico, and South Korea.

Ercin Erturk was born in 1988 in Sinop, Turkey. He studied journalism at Gazi University and has been working as staff photojournalist at Anadolu Agency since 2011 in Ankara. He received awards in 2016 and 2018 from the Photojournalists Association of Turkey (TFMD), the most prestigious photography association in his country. In 2022, he was awarded the third place in the sports category at the International Andrey Stenin Press Photography Competition in Russia. Months later, he received the Award of Excellence in Recreational & Traditional Sports category at the POY Asia 2023 Competition, and honorable mentions at the Siena Drone Photo Awards 2023, and the World Sports Photography Awards 2023. He ranked second in The City and The Urbanization Process category at the 2023 Transversalidades Photography Competition. Ercin Erturk’s work is mainly focused on politics, conflict and disaster. He is also personally interested in sports photography and develops his skills in drone photography since 2019.
